You can dress modestly in July without melting. I mean it. Every summer I hear from women who feel stuck between two bad options: swelter in layers that honor their convictions, or spend three months feeling uncomfortable in clothes that don't feel like them. Friend, that's a false choice. Modest summer clothing isn't about adding more fabric. It's about choosing better fabric, smarter shapes, and colors that work with the heat instead of against it. Pour yourself something cold and let's figure this out together.
What Modesty in July Is Really About
Before we talk outfits, let's settle the heart question, because summer has a way of turning modesty into a scorecard. It was never meant to be one. When Samuel was busy sizing up Jesse's sons by their looks, God told him plainly that He looks at the heart. Your hemline is not your holiness. Modesty is simply dressing in a way that reflects who you already are: a woman whose worth is settled, who doesn't need to prove anything at the neighborhood pool.
I want to say this gently, because I know how loud the noise gets by mid-June. Somebody at church has an opinion about shorts. Somebody online has a whole video about swimsuits. And somewhere in the middle of all that is you, standing in front of your closet at 7 a.m., trying to get dressed for a day that involves a splash pad, a grocery run, and a small group cookout. This post is for that moment. Not the debate. The closet.
And here's the sweet part. Jesus talked about clothes in the Sermon on the Mount, and He used flowers to do it.
"And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these."
Matthew 6:28-29
He wasn't saying clothes don't matter. He was saying they're not worth your worry. If you love the heart behind that verse, I wrote a whole post on why "Consider the Wildflowers" resonates with so many women. Summer dressing gets so much lighter, in every sense, once the worry comes off first.
Start With Fabric, Not Hemlines
Here's the secret nobody tells you: the difference between miserable and comfortable in modest summer clothing is almost never the amount of coverage. It's what the fabric is made of. A fitted polyester tank will leave you hotter than a loose cotton tee with sleeves, every single time. Polyester traps heat and holds onto sweat. Cotton breathes, wicks, and gets softer every wash.
So before you buy anything for summer, flip the tag and look for three things:
- 100% cotton or mostly cotton. Garment-dyed heavyweight cotton sounds counterintuitive for summer, but it hangs away from your body instead of clinging, and that airflow is everything.
- A relaxed, boxy cut. Air needs room to move. A slightly oversized tee keeps you cooler than anything tight, and it pairs beautifully with flowy skirts.
- Light colors. Ivory, sage, soft blue, butter yellow. Dark colors soak up the sun. Your black tees will still be there in October.
This is honestly why I fell in love with Comfort Colors tees for our shop. They check all three boxes without trying. If you want the deeper style philosophy behind this, my guide to modest Christian clothing that still feels like you walks through it season by season.
The Colors That Beat the Heat (And Still Feel Like You)
Color does more work in summer than in any other season. Light shades reflect the sun. Deep shades absorb it. You can feel the difference standing in a parking lot at 2 p.m., I promise. That doesn't mean your whole closet has to look like vanilla ice cream, but your heavy rotation should lean pale and dusty from June through September.
My favorites, if you want a place to start:
- Sage and eucalyptus green: calm, flattering on nearly every skin tone, and they hide iced coffee mishaps better than you'd think.
- Ivory and cream: softer than stark white, more forgiving of sunscreen smudges and long afternoons.
- Butter yellow: the happiest color in the bin. It reads sunshine without shouting.
- Dusty blue and chambray: the workhorses. They go with denim, khaki, white, and every skirt you own.
The lovely thing about garment-dyed tees is that the colors already come sun-washed and gentle, like they've lived a few good summers before they ever reached you. They were made for this exact season.
5 Modest Summer Outfit Formulas That Keep You Cool
I'm a formula girl. Decision fatigue is real, especially when it's 92 degrees and three kids are asking for breakfast. Steal these and repeat them all summer:
| The Formula | Why It Keeps You Cool | Where It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Loose graphic tee + flowy midi skirt | Air circulates under both pieces; nothing clings | Church, errands, coffee dates |
| Oversized tee + wide-leg linen pants | Linen is the coolest fabric there is | Work-from-home, travel days |
| Knotted tee + high-waisted denim shorts (longer inseam) | The knot adds shape without adding heat | Backyard BBQs, farmers markets |
| Sleeveless midi dress + light tee layered under | One thin cotton layer beats one thick one | Sunday service, showers, photos |
| Tee + bike shorts + open linen button-down | Coverage you can shed in the shade | Park days, walks, road trips |
Notice the pattern? A breathable tee anchors every one of these modest summer outfits. That's not an accident. It's the hardest-working piece in your closet from June through September. I shared more mix-and-match ideas in my post on styling Christian t-shirts from church to coffee shop if you want to keep going.
The Questions Every Summer Brings
What about sleeves? A relaxed short sleeve on a boxy tee covers your shoulders and stays cooler than a tank plus a cardigan you'll carry around all day. Flutter sleeves work too, and they photograph beautifully.
Necklines? Crew necks are your friend in summer, truly. They read classic, they never gap when you bend down to pick up a toddler, and on a light garment-dyed tee they feel breezy, not buttoned-up.
Can I wear a midi dress without leggings underneath? Yes, and please do. That's the whole gift of the midi length. If it hits mid-calf and the fabric isn't clingy, the dress is already doing the work. Adding leggings in 90-degree heat isn't more faithful. It's just hotter.
Swim? Grace, first. A longer-line one-piece with a swim skirt or board shorts is a comfortable middle path plenty of women love. Decide with your convictions, not the comment section, and then go enjoy the water with your kids.
Hats? A wide-brim straw hat might be the most underrated piece in your summer closet. Shade for your face, no sunscreen sting in your eyes, and it makes a tee and skirt look put together in about four seconds.
Sweat and white tees? Choose ivory or cream over stark white, and size up. Both hide the afternoon a lot more forgivingly.
What about church? The sanctuary runs cooler than the parking lot, which changes the maths a little. I worked those mornings out on their own in my guide to modest church outfits.
A Small Modest Summer Capsule (7 Pieces Is Plenty)
You don't need a new wardrobe. Seven pieces will carry you clear through Labor Day, and every piece works with every other piece. That's the whole trick. Here's the list:
- Three light-colored faith tees. Your anchors. One ivory, one sage, one soft blue, and you'll never stand at the closet confused again.
- One flowy midi skirt. Floral or solid, elastic waist if you're smart about it. Dressier than shorts, cooler than jeans.
- One pair of wide-leg linen pants. For the days you want covered legs without a single degree of extra heat.
- One linen button-down. Your air-conditioned-restaurant layer, your beach cover-up, your modesty insurance, all in one shirt.
- One sleeveless midi dress. Wear it alone at home, layer a tee under it for church, throw the button-down over it for dinner.
If you're picking the tees, choose designs that say something you actually want to carry around all summer. Our faith tees collection is full of garment-dyed Comfort Colors options in exactly the soft, light shades we've been talking about, from the Wildflowers Watercolors tee to the sunny Joy Grows Here floral.
WEARABLE THEOLOGY
Consider the Lilies T-Shirt
Soft ivory cotton with the very verse this post leans on. If summer clothes ever start feeling like a worry, this one preaches back.
SHOP THE TEE →Wear the Season With a Settled Heart
Sweet friend, summer is not a test you pass or fail with your closet. It's porch swings and sprinklers and church picnics and long golden evenings. Modest summer clothing, done right, should help you forget what you're wearing so you can be fully present for all of it.
So choose the breathable tee. Choose the flowy skirt. Choose clothes that let you chase the ice cream truck with your kids without a second thought. And when the enemy whispers that you have to choose between comfortable and faithful, remember the wildflowers. They're not striving. Neither are you.
With love, Anna
P.S. If your summer capsule needs a starting point, the Consider the Lilies tee in ivory is the one I'd grab first. Light, soft, and a little sermon you can wear.
