Short Thanksgiving Prayers for Family: 12 Simple Prayers for the Table and Beyond

Somebody is going to look at you this Thanksgiving and say, "Would you pray?" Maybe it'll be your mother-in-law. Maybe it'll be your eight-year-old. Maybe you already know it's your turn, and you're already quietly dreading it.

Here's some good news. The best Thanksgiving prayers are short. Nobody at the table wants a sermon while the gravy gets a skin on it, and God doesn't need one either. He's not grading your eloquence. He's listening to your heart.

He's not grading your eloquence. He's listening to your heart.

So I've gathered twelve short Thanksgiving prayers for family, for all the different kinds of tables we sit at. Some are ten seconds long. Most take under a minute (the popcorn prayer runs a little longer, depending on how many people join in). Use them word for word, or let them get you started and say the rest in your own words.

Why we pray before the Thanksgiving meal

Thanksgiving is one of the few days a year when nearly everybody gets the point. We're grateful, and we want to say so out loud.

For Christians, gratitude has an address. We're not just thankful in general. We're thanking Someone. The psalms say it over and over:

“Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever.”

Psalm 107:1 (NIV)

A prayer before the meal turns a nice holiday feeling into worship. It reminds everyone, including you, Who set the table long before you did. And if you'd like Scripture to read alongside these prayers, I've gathered Thanksgiving Bible verses to read out loud before the meal, with a free printable you can set at each place.

Short prayers for the Thanksgiving table

1. The ten-second grace

For the moment everyone is seated, the steam is rising, and the toddler is reaching for a roll.

Lord, thank You for this food, this family and this day. Every good thing here came from You. Amen.

2. A prayer kids can lead

Have your child say a line, and let everyone repeat it back. Kids love being in charge of this, and it keeps the little ones from rushing.

Dear God, (Dear God,) thank You for our food. (Thank You for our food.) Thank You for our family. (Thank You for our family.) Thank You for loving us. (Thank You for loving us.) Amen. (Amen!)

3. For the cooks and the helpers

Father, thank You for every pair of hands that made this meal: the ones that shopped, chopped, stirred, set the table and will wash the dishes. Bless them for their love. Thank You for the farmers and the workers we'll never meet who brought this food to us. And thank You most of all for providing it. In Jesus' name, amen.

4. For the empty chair

If someone you love isn't at the table this year, it's okay to name it. Pretending can make the day heavier. A short, honest prayer lets everyone breathe.

Lord, we feel the empty place at our table today. We miss ______ so much. Thank You for the years we had together and for the love that's still here in this room. Hold us close when it hurts. Help us to be gentle with each other today. Amen.

5. For a hard year

God, this year has not been easy, and You know every part of it. But You've been faithful anyway. Thank You for getting us here. Thank You that we're together around this table. Help us see the good You've given, even in the middle of the hard. Amen.

If that's where you are this fall, you're not alone, and you might find some company in these Bible verses about gratitude, which talk about giving thanks when life doesn't feel very thankful.

6. When not everyone at the table believes

Many of us sit at tables with people who don't share our faith. A short, warm prayer can honor God without making anyone feel preached at. Keep it about gratitude and love.

Lord, thank You for bringing every person around this table together today. Thank You for this food and for the people who made it. Thank You for the gift of family and friendship. We're grateful. Amen.

7. For family far away

Father, we're thinking of the people we love who can't be here today. Keep everyone traveling safe on the roads and in the air. Let our families feel loved, wherever they're sitting down to eat. Thank You that distance is nothing to You. Amen.

8. For those working today

Lord, bless the nurses, doctors, police officers, firefighters, soldiers, and everyone working while we eat. Give them strength and kindness, and let them feel appreciated today. Thank You for their service. Amen.

9. The popcorn prayer

This one works beautifully with big, noisy families. Someone starts, then anyone who'd like to "pops" in with one thing they're thankful for, in any order, one or two words each. Nobody has to, and it's fine to just listen. Then one person closes.

Lord, we're thankful for... (everyone adds a word: "Grandma," "the new baby," "pie," "my job," "Jesus")... and for everything we didn't have time to name. Thank You. Amen.

Yes, someone will say "pie." Let them. That's half the fun.

10. Thanksgiving morning

Before the oven timer starts beeping and the doorbell starts ringing, take thirty seconds for yourself.

Good morning, Lord. Before this day gets busy, I want to thank You first. Give me patience when things go wrong and joy in the little moments. Help me to love the people coming through my door well. Let today be about You. Amen.

Paul's advice fits this morning perfectly: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6). Even the turkey situation. Especially the turkey situation.

11. After the meal

Thank You, Lord, for filling our plates and our hearts. Help us to share what we've been given with people who need it. Amen.

12. When the day is done

Maybe at the sink with your hands in warm, soapy water. Maybe face down on your pillow.

Father, thank You for today. For the laughter, the food, the people, and even the mess. Forgive me where I was short-tempered or distracted. Let me carry this gratitude into tomorrow and every day after. Amen.

Tips for leading a Thanksgiving prayer (even if you're nervous)

  • Write it down. Nobody minds a prayer read off an index card. Slip it under your plate and glance down when you need to.
  • Keep it short. Thirty seconds feels much longer when you're the one talking. Short and sincere beats long and impressive.
  • Use "we" and "us." It gathers everyone into the prayer instead of making it a solo performance.
  • Name one specific thing. "Thank You for the new baby" lands more warmly than "thank You for all our blessings."
  • It's fine to pause. If you get emotional, take a breath. Your family won't mind. That might be the most honest moment of the day.
  • Let the kids help. Their prayers are often the ones everyone remembers.

Gratitude that lasts past Thursday

Thanksgiving is one day on the calendar, but it can start a habit that carries all year long. What if the prayer you say at the table on Thursday became the prayer you say at dinner every night in December?

Scripture puts it simply: "Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful" (Colossians 4:2). Watchful and thankful. Noticing the good, and naming its Giver.

I hope one of these prayers helps you this year. If you'd like a little gratitude you can wear to the table, our cozy fall and Thanksgiving tees are made for exactly that. And if you're wondering what to wear, here are some ideas for Christian Thanksgiving shirts.

Happy Thanksgiving, friend. May your table be full, your heart even fuller, and your gravy lump-free.

With love, Anna

P.S. If you're the one who'll be asked to pray, our Thank the Lord Today tee might just be the perfect thing to wear. It says the whole prayer in four words.
